LPG Compliance

Supagas is committed to providing safe and compliant LPG supply to our customers. We’ve put together a guide to the key compliance and installation requirements for each state and territory.

Quick overview - LPG Compliance

  • Residential 45 kg LPG installations must comply with Australian Standards (principally AS/NZS 1596 for storage and handling and AS/NZS 5601 for gas installations) and any state regulatory requirements. Suppliers will usually only connect or deliver gas once a licensed gas fitter has completed the installation and issued the required certificate.

  • Cylinder location, clearances and exclusion zones are mandatory: cylinders must be upright on a solid, non-combustible base, in a ventilated outdoor position away from drains, openings into buildings and ignition sources. Exact clearances depend on the installation and whether cylinders are exchanged or filled via a tanker.

  • Only licensed gas fitters may install or modify fixed LPG installations. After work on non-network related gas installations, the gas fitter must provide compliance information to the owner and the gas supplier. This is mandatory in all states.

Installation

  • 1. Outdoor, ventilated location

45 kg cylinders must be sited outdoors in an open, well ventilated area. Enclosures, pits or low points where LPG could collect are not permitted. Follow the exclusion zone measurements for wall openings and drains. Click here to see the image.

  • 2. Solid base and restraint

Cylinders must sit on a solid fire-resistant base (concrete or pavers) and be restrained (chain or bracket) to prevent tipping and ensure pressure relief devices operate correctly. Click here to see the image.

  • 3. Safe distance from ignition sources

Installations must be kept well clear of air conditioners, power points and other ignition sources as specified in the relevant standard and state guidance. Click here to see the image.

LPG Compliance Requirements

What is an LPG Compliance Certificate?

An LPG Compliance Certificate is an assurance that:

  • the gasfitter is appropriately licensed

  • the work completed has been tested and is proven to be safe

  • the work complies with the requirements of AS 1596 and AS 5601 and other applicable Australian Standards

  • the contractor has officially informed you of any existing safety problems with your installation

  • you have met your legal obligation to own a safe installation and have a permanent legal record for the job

An LPG Compliance Certificate should be given to you at or shortly after the completion of the following gas work:

  • installing new gas pipe work, including regulators

  • extending or repairing existing gas pipe work

  • installing new appliances – for example heaters, hot water units, stove tops

  • replacing an appliance

Responsibility to maintain gas installations

There is a requirement for owners or occupiers to maintain their gas installations in safe working order. The requirement is not onerous but is designed to ensure the owner or occupier make sure the gas installation is not impaired by interference, damage, ageing or wear, is used as designed, and is not made a fire danger by having combustible materials stored in the vicinity of the gas cylinders.

What does a compliance plate look like?

A compliance plate is a small metal or plastic badge that is stamped with information which is specific to that installation. It contains the date of installation, the gas fitter's license number, the compliance certificate number, and code numbers indicating what sort of appliances are connected to the installation. Victoria and South Australia don't use compliance plates and from 1st January 2026, compliance plates are no longer a legal requirement in Queensland.

Quick guide: LPG compliance certificate and plate requirements by state

State or Territory

Compliance Requirements

New South Wales (NSW)

A Certificate of Inspection (for non-network LPG) or Certificate of Compliance must be issued by a licensed gas fitter within 5 business days after installation. A compliance plate must also be attached.

Victoria (VIC)

A Certificate of Compliance must be issued and lodged with the Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC).

Queensland (QLD)

A e-Gas System Compliance Certificate (e-GSCC) is required from January 1st, 2026.

South Australia (SA)

Licensed gas fitters must issue an e-Certificate of Compliance (e-CoC) after the gas work is completed.

Western Australia (WA)

After gas-fitting work, a Notice of Completion is issued, and a compliance badge or plate must be affixed. Some older installations may not have a compliance plate.

Tasmania (TAS)

Gas fitters must issue a Gas Fitting Notice or LP Gas Storage Notice (also known as a Start Work Notice), and a compliance plate needs to be attached.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

A Certificate of Compliance must be provided after gas-fitting work, and a compliance indicator plate should be installed.

Northern Territory (NT)

A Certificate of Inspection or Compliance must be issued by a licensed fitter, and a compliance plate affixed to the installation.

Why the compliance certificate and plate matter to homeowners

A compliance certificate or compliance plate proves the installation was completed by a licensed professional and tested to the required safety standards. Suppliers such as Supagas will request evidence of compliance before supplying gas to a residential installation to ensure site safety and legal compliance. Keeping the certificate and plate information safe also protects homeowners for insurance and resale purposes. Unauthorised or unverified installations may result in supply refusal, insurance issues or safety risks.
