Safe Storage of Heatagas LPG Cylinders
Safe storage of LPG cylinders is essential to maintain a safe working environment and ensure compliance with industry regulations. Supagas recommends the following guidelines when storing Heatagas LPG cylinders used with commercial gas heaters, as well as following the exclusion zone measurements outlined in the adjacent image.
Indoor Storage Guidelines
Indoor LPG cylinder storage must be carefully managed and limited based on the size of the space.
The allowable quantity is:
10 kg of LPG per 10 m² of floor area, up to a maximum room size of 30 m².
For example: A 30 m² room (approximately 5 m × 6 m) may store a maximum of three 8.5 kg Heatagas cylinders.
Important considerations:
LPG cylinders should always be stored upright and in a well-ventilated area.
Spare or empty LPG cylinders must not be stored inside commercial kitchens.
Cylinders should be kept away from ignition sources and heat.
These guidelines help minimise risk while ensuring safe operation in commercial environments.
Outdoor Storage Guidelines
When stored outdoors, LPG cylinders must be properly secured to prevent them from falling or being damaged.
For LPG cylinders greater than 25 litres and less than 200 litres capacity, restraint is required.
Heatagas cylinder sizes include:
8.5 kg LPG cylinder – approximately 22 L capacity
13.5 kg LPG cylinder – approximately 32 L capacity
Because the 13.5 kg cylinder exceeds 25 L, any cylinder not secured within a heater must be restrained, typically by:
A safety chain, or
A protective storage cage
This helps prevent tipping, damage to valves and potential gas leaks.
How to Tell If A Tank Is Full or Empty
Not sure how much LPG you have left in your Heatagas cylinder? A simple check can help you plan your next swap.
Step 1 - Boil a kettle and pour the hot water over the cylinder, starting from the top and working your way down the side to the base.
Step 2 - After you've poured the water, run your hand down the gas cylinder starting from the top. The hot water will heat the metal of the cylinder but due to the cold nature of LPG, the metal will remain cool wherever it is in contact with the gas. Therefore, the section of cylinder that remains cool is the section that contains product.
Please note: Only adults should handle hot water. Supagas is not responsible for any mishandling of the hot water.
